What is The Foundation’s Purpose?
- The Foundation for Dental Laboratory Technology is committed to advocating and raising awareness for the necessity of dental laboratory technology education for dental technicians and other effected members of the dental team.
-
The Foundation will develop a national curriculum for Dental Laboratory Technology that will incorporate industry driven needs that are derived from NADL’s Competency Standards, NBC’s Job Task Analysis and workplace-based assessments such as NBC’s Modularization exams. The Foundation will promote a National curriculum that supports the needs of the industry and dentistry.
-
The Foundation will provide scholarships to interested candidates for advanced education.
-
The Foundation will develop educational programs that will be relevant and accessible to both dental technicians working in a laboratory setting as well as dental laboratory technology students.
Who Benefits?
- Existing formal DLT educational program:
- Formal, existing Dental Laboratory Technology educational programs can benefit from the access to the Foundation’s web-based education by providing up-to-date, relevant, National curriculum, perhaps saving money and time for the existing programs.
- Dental laboratory technicians (incumbent workers):
- Dental laboratory technicians who are currently working in a laboratory setting will have access to the Foundation’s web-based education and will therefore be able to educate themselves on the same level, utilizing the same knowledge, as formal educational, degree providing programs. The Foundation will work toward building a ladder from the workplace delivered education to the ability to apply for a degree-awarding educational institution.
- Commercial dental laboratory owners and managers:
- Many dental laboratories who employ more than a few people struggle with how to appropriately and adequately train and educate their employees so that their work is consistent and the product they produce meets their quality expectations. Part of the challenge is having the time to relay the necessary knowledge to the technician, on top of the time-consuming challenge of demonstrating the necessary physical skills. The Foundation’s web-based education can become an important part of the in-house training and education for laboratories not able to develop their own. The NBC Modularization program can be the assessment mechanism available to laboratories to determine if their technicians have assimilated both the knowledge and skills necessary to be competent in specific areas of dental laboratory technology.
How Are We Funded?
The Foundation for Dental Laboratory Technology will be initially funded by a generous $200,000 contribution from the National Association of Dental Laboratories. Because NADL believes that the future of Dental Laboratory Technology is a responsibility that NADL shares with those professionals in the industry, NADL will maintain a close relationship with The Foundation.
It is envisioned that in order for The Foundation to meet its objectives, a concise business and strategic plan must be developed early in the first year. It is also anticipated that a fundraising campaign must be ongoing to fund the development and delivery of the web-based education that The Foundation will commit to.
